Design's Next Frontier: Nudging Consumers Into Making Better Life Choices

1280-science-influence-consumer-choices_1
As we recently discussed, we designers are quickly learning that it makes a lot more sense to design for emotion rather than just reason. Today, Co.Design highlighted another interesting take on why/how to do this with design, via Rob Girling of Artefact. Please check out his post, "Design's Next Frontier: Nudging Consumers Into Making Better Life Choices."

This subject - design's link to positive behavior change - is one we've thought about for a long time, and won't stop exploring any time soon. We'll keep posting on favorite resources we find in this growing discourse, and please feel free to send any and all our way!

Friday = DogDay @ eleven

Every Friday is “DogDay” at eleven.  Having the Dogs running around the office is great for the human spirit and brings out the inner-youth in everyone here.  Since Friday is Dog day, we wanted to share some amazing photos from  the “Diving Dogs” series by photographer Seth Casteel.  And check out  Jamie’s dog, Maracas at the bottom!!

(ELEVEN)'s Take on Tacos

Tacotime_002

Happy Friday!

We know you've been waiting with bated breath to find out how Taco Time went here at (ELEVEN). Well, after not one but two days of taco lunches, we can definitely give two (30?) thumbs up to the results.

As you can see, I clearly forgot to list one key set of ingredients in Wednesday's post - Coronas with lime. But otherwise we went above and beyond the ingredient list, for a proper, full-on feast (for example, never before have I had roasted cauliflower with tacos, but I've obviously been missing out).

More than just demonstrating our collective culinary expertise, though, it was yet another lunch that proved that group cookouts are one of our favorite events at (ELEVEN). One of the best ways to take a break from the work reason we'll all here, and remind ourselves of the other - perhaps as significant - reason we come to Canal Street every day: the group.

We hope to keep up our promise of one theme-based feast per month. Green food on St. Patrick's Day, anyone?

Designing for Human Nature

Inline-bike-rim-rebranding-transportation
Quite a few of us at (ELEVEN) don't need any convincing that bikes or buses (or, heck, walking) are cool. And, as a Co.Design post this morning points out, this perception of perhaps a new lifestyle option for someone is crucial - meaning, if we want to successfully promote services or products that are cheaper or more environmentally friendly or sustainable (or whatever it may be), we sure better speak to users' emotions, not just their rational thinking. Sure, in many ways it makes sense to go with the cheap or environmentally kind option, but people won't go ahead and do it until they excited to - when they think it's cool, aspirational, a part of their own identity.

Great reminder that, no matter how thought-out a product's creation and launch is, it might not succeed if the peccadilloes of us silly humans aren't fully taken into account too. Design for humans - and human nature - and not just reasonable, practical beings.

Once again, check out the original article - "How Do You Wean People Off Cars? By Rebranding Bikes and Buses" - for the excellent, specific example of Tata's Nano. And have a happy Friday!

John Thackara: Design In The Light of Dark Energy: Observers Room: Design Observer
Media_httpobserversro_uchha

According to John Thackara, we're heading toward a future in which there simply will not be enough energy resources to maintain the kind of infinite economic growth to which we have become accustomed. There being significant evidence for this point of view, why is the idea of reigning in economic growth a complete nonstarter? We just keep on believing that the inventors and scientists will discover an unlimited energy source at the last minute, just before the great energy crisis, and save us all. Why not, it happens all the time in the movies.

Anyway, Mr. Thackara's article is insightful and worth reading.
